I took some time today to unlock the new secret “cow” level. It really isn’t a secret at all that it exists but I know it can be difficult to find everything you need to know about it in one place. Hence, the purpose of this guide.
I’m going to walk you through all the steps that you need to take in order to start slaughtering teddy bears and ponies while eating cupcakes.
WARNING! You may need your sunglasses to play it.
You will need to craft the Staff of Herding in order to unlock the level, while that seems easy enough there are a few different mats you will need.
Black Mushroom
Leoric’s Shinbone
Wirt’s Bell
Liquid Rainbow
Gibbering Gemstone
In addition to those you will need the plans in order to know how to make the staff. This is probably the easiest to get, it can be purchased from the Act 3 Quartermaster vendor just outside the Armory. Here’s the vendor:
Getting The Black Mushroom
This one is pretty easy to accomplish and is fairly common. It is random but it’s not hard to get at all. It can be found in the Cathedral Level 1 in Act 1. It spawns in the room with the narrow L-shaped hallway. Here’s a picture of what to look for:
Finding Leoric’s Shinbone
This one is pretty straight forward as well. Start a new game on the quest Imprisoned Angel (Act 1) for the waypoint. Start out at the Leoric’s Manor waypoint and go backwards into the room with the fireplace.
You are looking in the fireplace for a Burnt Log, open it up and the shinbone will fall out. In the spirit of Diablo this will not be there every time, although it only took me 3 tries to get it. Here’s a video of the path to take:
Wirt’s Bell
Wirt’s Bell can be purchased from the Act 2 vendor, Squirt the Peddler, for 100k gold. (Look under the Miscellaneous tab) She is located in the Bazaar a bit southwest of where you came in at.
Getting the Liquid Rainbow
This took the longest for me to get although it only took about an hour of actively looking for it. This can also be found in Act 2 in Dahlgur Oasis.
Start on the second half of the quest, Betrayer of the Horadrim (Forgotten Ruins). This puts you at the waypoint close to one of the spots. There are 2 possible places that I’ve seen on the map. The first one is really close to the first waypoint and is considered the easiest to farm.
From the waypoint head east along the southern edge of the map. You’ll come across a little “nook” with a watery, narrow opening as seen in the picture below.
Once there you want to see a frightened NPC and after clearing monsters he will talk to you and open the mysterious cave for you.
Inside the cave you want to find a Mysterious Chest which holds the Liquid Rainbow inside. Note, this chest spawns at different locations on the 2nd level, but if you find a Resplendent Chest that means there is no Mysterious Chest inside so you will have to start over again.
This part is kinda annoying since it’s random when the NPC vendor is there and then random again if the Mysterious Chest spawns in the cave. So, the RNG might make this take awhile to get done.
Gibbering Gemstone
Act 3 is where you want to be for this. Specifically, the Machines of War quest (Destroy Ballistae). You want to find the Caverns of Frost. The easiest way I found is from the waypoint go northwest…the cave spawned up there twice in a row for me. Inside the cave you want to find a monster called Chiltara.
After you kill him he drops the gemstone…keep in mind that it’s a white item so look carefully. He also doesn’t spawn all the time in the cave and can spawn in either level 1 or 2.
Putting It All Together
Head back to the blacksmith and make the item with the items above and a crafting fee of 50,000 gold. The cost goes up as you craft up the higher staves. For the nightmare staff it’s 200,000 gold on top of previous amounts, and for the hell difficulty one it’s 500,000 gold.
After you craft it, head to Act 1 Old Tristram Road and look for the Ghost of the Cow King. Head northeast and you’ll find him. He spawns when you get close and has a quest marker on him. Listen to his dialogue and then click to enter Whimsyshire.
Next step….SLAY SOME UNICORNS AND TEDDY BEARS!!! 🙂
